“Griffith’s Valuation” exhibition – Sunday 31st July

griffith“As part of our focus on local Heritage during Castlerea Rose Festival, Trinity Arts Centre will host a special exhibition featuring “Griffith’s Valuation”on , from 4 – 6 pm on behalf of Castlerea Heritage Forum. The material on display reflects the details of householders, tenants, land and landlords for the parishes of Castlerea (Kilkeevan), Baslick and Ballintubber as recorded by the Griffith surveyors and published in 1856/7. This is an essential starting point for any person interested in identifying relatives from that era. At the time of the Survey over 80% of the country was recorded with some of the Surveys published as early as 1847, at the peak of the Famine. In many instances, the tenants recorded on small holdings at that time have shown to be direct relatives of families who subsequently became owners, in their own right, by virtue of the various Land Acts of the late 19th and early 20th century.”
